Our history

The history of our hotel dates back to 1550. Early on, Grünwalderhof not only attracted north-south travelers, it also served as a transit point for transporting salt from the Hall salt works via the Brenner Pass to the south. The former hunting lodge has been owned by the Counts of Thurn Valsassina and Taxis for half a millennium and has been operated as a hotel since 1929. The special aesthetics of the building bear the signature of renowned Bavarian painter Gotthard Bauer, who decorated the exterior façade as well as the guest lounges, banquet rooms, and corridors with artistic frescoes. Follow in the footsteps of days gone by, where the past comes alive and nature becomes the backdrop for unforgettable experiences.

Preservation and sustainable concepts

Our values

Our motto is to preserve the old and integrate new concepts. We always strive to keep the original building in the best possible condition. That’s why there is no elevator at Grünwalderhof. Instead, the creaking of the stairs will remind you of the stories that have been lived out here over the centuries.

And we strive to do even more! Most of the lighting in our hotel consists of LED lamps and our corridors are fitted with motion detectors. For stays of two nights or more, you can request to cancel the daily room cleaning. This way, you can help us minimize water and electricity consumption. We will give you a drink voucher as a small thank you for your contribution to sustainability.
